Overview of the Program

"It is a great time to join our Internal Medicine Residency Program. We have been commended by the American Board of Internal Medicine for our enthusiastic faculty and very favorable faculty-to-resident ratio. We have been the recipient of three federal grants to expand our community training program in areas such as Evidence Based Medicine, HIV, Geriatrics, End of Life/Palliative Care, and Preventive Health Care.

In March, 2004 we joined with Resurrection Health Care, becoming the fourth Internal Medicine Program in the system. We benefit by having more possibilities for training rotations and by having health care personnel to share. We are very fortunate to be a part of such a large, financially stable health care system which is very supportive of Graduate Medical Education.

Whether your future is in general internal medicine or one of its subspecialties, your educational needs will be met. Strengths of our program include an explicit and firm commitment to education over service, personalized training in a community hospital setting, outstanding ambulatory and primary care training, a superb group of teaching medical subspecialists, and opportunities to join practices upon completion of training."

Internal Medicine Residency Program

The three-year categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program at West Suburban Medical Center is dedicated to training residents to become responsible, confident and compassionate primary care internists and sub-specialists in internal medicine.

We believe that in the future, health care will demand effective, efficient and patient-focused physicians. The key to competence in internal medicine is clinical experience. To prepare residents, our program provides state-of-the-art facilities you will need to care for the needs of your patients, from admission to discharge as well as follow-up office visits. Dedicated faculty physicians to teach and mentor, ancillary services to assist you in medical decisions, and an educational environment to encourage academic curiosity are the strengths of our community based program. In the past few years, we have received two large federal grants to expand our curricular offerings in geriatrics, behavioral science, HIV, community medicine, informatics & evidence-based medicine, complementary/alternative medicine, alternative, and hospice/palliative care.

Our residents have matriculated to a variety of careers, including private practice, subspecialty training (pulmonary/critical care, cardiology, GI, geriatrics, rheumatology and endocrinology, to name a few), and hospital based practice. We have taught medical students in the inpatient and outpatient settings in all four years of their training. West Suburban Medical Center has a well-respected Family Medicine Program to complement internal medicine training.

Our preliminary year program offers an excellent one-year opportunity for trainees who either require a broad medical experience or those uncertain of their future career specialties.
